Renal Guard
Therapy
RenalGuard Therapy™
is designed to reduce the toxic effects that contrast
media can have on the kidneys. This therapy is based on the
theory that creating and maintaining a high urine output is
beneficial to patients undergoing imaging procedures where
contrast agents are used.
The real-time measurement and matched fluid replacement design
of the RenalGuard System™ is intended to ensure that a high
urine flow is maintained before, during and after these
procedures. This should allow the body to rapidly eliminate
contrast, reducing its toxic effects.
The RenalGuard System with its matched fluid replacement
capability is intended to minimize the risk of over-or
under-hydration.
The use of the system may help reduce the incidence of
Contrast-Induced Nephropathy (CIN), a form of Acute Renal
Failure caused by contrast media during coronary angiograms,
coronary interventions
and other image-guided cardiology and radiology procedures.
The RenalGuard System easily integrates into the cardiac
catheterization and other imaging lab environments. It is
mounted on an IV pole, can be placed at the feet of the patient,
and can be used during transport of the patient in order to
maintain balanced hydration. The system can be set up within
minutes and requires minimal user interaction and intervention.
Benefits of RenalGuard
The potential benefits of RenalGuard Therapy are intended to
reduce the incidence of Contrast-Induced Nephropathy via a
combination of known physiological effects of high urine output
including:
 |
Lower concentrations of contrast in
the kidneys |
 |
More rapid transit of contrast
through the kidneys |
 |
Less overall exposure to toxic
contrast |
 |
Potential reduction of oxygen
consumption in the medulla of the kidney |
The use of RenalGuard may reduce the chances of acute renal
failure and long term morbidity and mortality due to exposure to
contrast media, and may help reduce hospital costs for the high
risk patient.
